These days, BMW sells more SUVs than sedans and coupes combined. Globally, the X3 is now its best-seller, having surpassed the 3 Series as BMW's mainstay since its launch more than 20 years ago. Now, for 2025, BMW is launching a new X3 that comes with a bold new look, a revamped infotainment system, and a pair of upgraded engines.

New Fresh Style

The X3 — which BMW calls the fourth generation but is actually a major revision of the previous one — has a new design with clean lines and trim details. The 2025 model is 1.3 inches longer and 1.1 inches wider than its predecessor, while sitting 1.0 inch lower. That results in a sportier stance that mimics the 738-horsepower XM plug-in hybrid SUV, with an emphasis on the striking wheel arches and long roof spoiler. Two X3 models will be offered, the xDrive30 and the M50. (BMW is dropping the “i,” which previously denoted fuel injection, from its fuel-injected models; the “i” is now exclusive to BMW EVs.)

The X3 features a new take on BMW’s signature grille for the base model, with an asymmetrical mix of vertical and diagonal bars, while the M50 has a simpler black grille. The grille surround is illuminated as standard on the M50 — an option on the xDrive30 — while the headlights consist of overlapping L-shaped elements adorned with either black or blue trim, depending on the model. The more powerful M50 has an aggressive front bumper with larger air intakes. The xDrive30 comes standard with 19-inch wheels, with 20- and 21-inch options. While the xDrive30’s exhausts are hidden, the M50 proudly displays dual exhaust tips on either side of the rear bumper.

Inside, the cabin features a bold design with unusual ambient lighting. The lighting can display contrasting colors and forms U-shaped elements on the center console and door panels, creating outlines around the air vents, door handles and some of the door-mounted buttons.

The future-oriented lighting is accompanied by a large curved display that houses a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen, and although BMW didn’t provide dimensions, the screens look suitably large. The X3 runs the latest software, BMW iDrive 9, which has led BMW to further reduce the number of physical controls inside. The new system supports apps for video streaming, music and in-car gaming, and the navigation system now includes 3D and satellite views. The head-up display remains optional, and BMW says it has upgraded the voice assistant to better communicate when it hears commands.

The steering wheel has a flat bottom and a new gear selector is located on the center console. As standard, the seats are electrically adjustable and heated. In the base model, the seats are upholstered in BMW's Veganza faux-leather, but they can be upgraded with Alcantara details or replaced with Merino leather seats. For the first time, the dashboard can be upholstered in a woven fabric made from recycled polyester.

Efficient and Powerful Engines

The xDrive30 model is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with a 48-volt hybrid system. The powertrain produces 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque , an increase of seven horsepower and 37 pound-feet. BMW says the xDrive30 will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph . BMW also boasts improved efficiency thanks to the use of the Miller combustion cycle, redesigned intakes and combustion chambers, and a revised ignition system, among other changes.

The M50 , meanwhile, features a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine mated to a 48-volt hybrid system. Output is rated at 393 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque , 11 horsepower and 59 pound-feet more than the previous M40i model. BMW says 0-62 mph acceleration is achieved in 4.4 seconds , and the 130 mph top speed can be extended to 153 mph with an optional package.

In both powertrains, the electric motor is integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission and can either add to the engine’s performance or lighten the load on the engine. The six-cylinder engine receives similar efficiency upgrades to the four-cylinder, as well as an optimized oil supply system for the pistons and a better high-performance turbocharger. BMW also says the M50 is equipped with an “extremely rigid” engine mount.

The M50 rides on an adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers, combined with variable sport steering and an M Sport rear differential. M Sport brakes — fixed four-piston units at the front and floating single-piston calipers at the rear — help with braking. Most of this equipment is also optional on the xDrive30. When equipped with a towbar, the X3 can tow up to 2.2 tons.

Full of Technology

Like any new luxury car, there are a number of driving and parking assistance functions, from lane assist to blind spot detection and a new optional Parking Assistant Professional package that takes into account other vehicles, road markings and the kerb to identify the boundaries of a parking space. The SUV can also be controlled from the outside via the My BMW app, allowing you to steer it in and out of tight spaces remotely. Using the Maneuver Assistant program, you can save up to 10 manoeuvres with a total length of up to 650 metres. There is also a Traffic Jam Assistant that can complete hands-free driving at speeds of up to 65 km/h on limited-access motorways.

Prices and Availability in Greece

The X3 for the U.S. market will continue to be built at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant, with sales starting in the fourth quarter of this year. The X3 xDrive30 will start at $50,675, while the X3 M50 will cost $65,275 before options. That’s only a $780 increase over the previous xDrive30i, though the 2024 model also offered a cheaper rear-wheel-drive model that cost $2,780 less. The new M50 is $2,380 more expensive than the 2024 X3 M40i.

The prices and release date of the BMW X3 xDrive30 and M50 for 2025 in Greece have not been officially announced by BMW so far.

It is expected that prices in Europe, including Greece, will be slightly higher due to tax differences and import duties. You can expect prices in Greece to be announced shortly before launch, with possible availability towards the end of 2024 or early 2025.

For accurate information, it would be a good idea to contact an official BMW dealer in Greece or follow official BMW announcements.
