Intel 's Thunderbolt Share allows two PCs to control each other via a USB cable. The application allows for sharing displays , peripherals , and storage .

Why can't you just plug a USB cable between two PCs, move your mouse from one monitor to the other, and transfer files between them as if they were a single machine? Well, you can, and you've been doing it for years – but Intel may be giving this idea a boost with Thunderbolt Share.

It's a proprietary application that Intel will license to laptop , desktop, and accessory makers to include in their new hardware. Install it on two Thunderbolt 4 or 5 PCs , connect them with a Thunderbolt cable, and you should be able to share your mouse, keyboard, displays, storage, and other USB peripherals; transfer files at Thunderbolt speeds; and sync data between them. It won't let you share your internet connection, though.

Intel says you can also mirror one PC's display to another at 1080p resolution and 60 fps with low latency and zero compression - and the PCs can be connected via a Thunderbolt dock or display if that's more convenient than a direct connection.

It doesn't strictly require a Thunderbolt-certified computer, by the way, or even necessarily an Intel processor. "USB 4 and Thunderbolt 3 connections may work, we just don't guarantee it, we won't provide support for it," says Intel Thunderbolt president Jason Ziller.

However, it does require the app, for which Intel will charge OEMs an additional licensing fee to provide it exclusively with new hardware. Having to buy a subset of Thunderbolt-enabled computers or accessories somewhat limits the environments in which this could be useful! Intel says you get a second license with any Thunderbolt Share computer you buy, or two with any accessory.

“The app is an offering because PC makers are interested,” Ziller says, and Intel wants to fully test and certify it with them “to make sure it’s a great experience.”

It's also Windows-only at the moment: "We're looking at other operating system opportunities, but it wouldn't work connected to a Mac at this time."

Acer , Lenovo , MSI , and Razer are the first PC partners, along with accessory vendors Belkin, Kensington, Plugable, and Promise Technology. Some of these companies previously sold “ Easy Transfer ” cables designed to be moved from one computer to another. Plugable already sells a Thunderbolt cable packaged with the Bravura Easy Computer Sync app that offers file transfers and remote computer control. The real question is: “ How will Thunderbolt Share compare to that? ”
