Following criticism that iPadOS limitations prevent the new iPad Pro from easily replacing a MacBook Pro, Apple is emphasizing that the two devices are designed to work complementary.
In other words, buy both. The issue of iPadOS seemingly not being as capable as the hardware in the iPad Air and iPad Pro has been highlighted in all the recent reviews of the new version.

However, the Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern raised the issue with an Apple executive about the difficulties of using the iPad Pro with iPadOS. And how, while in some cases the new iPad Pro may actually perform better than a MacBook Pro, it argues that it can't be someone's only computing device.
“We don’t see them as competing devices. We see them as complementary devices,” said Tom Boger, Apple’s vice president of iPad and Mac product marketing, addressing her.
According to Tom Boger, Apple has always considered the iPad to be a touch-based device. In contrast, the Mac, in whatever form we're referring to, is designed for what he described as "indirect control," where its functionality is achieved through the use of accessories like the keyboard and trackpad.
Joanna Stern asked Tom Boger if Apple would ever consider releasing a Mac with a touchscreen.
“I can’t say we haven’t changed our minds,” he replied. Rumors of Macs with touchscreens have been circulating for years.

Tom Boger did not go further and did not confirm the rumor for 2022 - which is probably a wishful thinking - that Apple had plans to integrate macOS into iPads with an M2 chip.
