In 2009, Susquehanna International Group, a firm known for its shrewd market investment strategies, made a promising investment in a Chinese real estate startup called 99Fang. This company has an advanced search algorithm. Although this venture failed to meet commercial expectations, it laid the foundation for the creation of ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, which would later follow.
During this period of transition, Zhang Yiming, founder of ByteDance, inspired by the path of Steve Jobs, charted a new course of transformation from the real estate industry to entertainment and media. This vision laid the foundation for the creation of TikTok, as reported in a New York Times article.
“Our work in search, image processing, recommendations and more is extremely advanced,” Mr. Zhang said in an email in 2012. “However, the application of these technologies to the real estate sector remains significantly limited.”
The detailed court records reveal that Susquehanna’s active involvement was instrumental in the evolution of the technology, transforming it from an initial application for static real estate to a platform capable of supporting dynamic content. This reflects Jobs’ ability to understand and exploit technology in transformative ways, driving the reinvention of industries.

Some proposals may lead to drastic measures, such as banning the application from operating or forcibly selling its operations within the United States.

This discussion is taking place in the context of broader tensions between the US and China, spanning trade, technology and geopolitical rivalries. The outcomes of these negotiations have the potential to shape not only the future of TikTok, but also raise questions about how the international community manages technology.
