Microsoft a new office in London aimed at research and development of artificial intelligence (AI).
Its head of artificial intelligence Mustafa Suleyman announced that it will offer jobs for “exceptional individuals” in the coming weeks and months, without yet mentioning the number of jobs that will be created.
Microsoft is a major investor in OpenAI, which created ChatGPT and opened its own office in London in 2023.

“The UK has a huge pool of talent and expertise in AI,” Mr Suleyman said in a post. “Microsoft AI plans to make a significant and long-term investment in the region, bringing together leading AI scientists and engineers in this new centre.”.
Mr. Suleyman co-founded the UK-based artificial intelligence research lab DeepMind, which was acquired by Google in 2014.
In 2022, he began creating his own artificial intelligence company, Inflection AI, before joining Microsoft in March.
He then said that artificial intelligence expert Jordan Hoffmann – who also worked at DeepMind and Inflection – would lead the new office. “Microsoft AI London is driving pioneering work in developing state-of -the-art language models and the infrastructure to support them,” said Mr Suleyman.
It praised the UK’s pioneering “safety-first” approach to artificial intelligence – just a week after UK technology minister Michelle Donelan signed an agreement with the United States to collaborate on testing advanced artificial intelligence models.
Mr Suleyman said his new UK office would work closely with staff at OpenAI, in which he has invested heavily. Microsoft had previously said it would build on its initial $1bn (£790m) investment in OpenAI to launch a long-term partnership by early 2023.
She has since pledged her support for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, especially during his chaotic removal and reinstatement to the company in November.
Since then, Microsoft has become the most valuable publicly traded company in the world, with a market value of more than $3 trillion.
“The establishment of Microsoft AI in a space in the heart of London is another boost to the capital’s growing tech ecosystem,” said Russ Shaw, founder of campaign group Tech London Advocates.

The announcement from its London office represents a significant show of confidence in the UK from one of the leaders in the global technology industry.
" AI is already helping people work more efficiently and creatively, and is a critical element for the UK as a world-leading technology ecosystem. Maintaining the forefront of technology research and innovation is vital," he added.
