Update: April 8, 2024 : Gemini was supposed to be an experience within the Google app without completely replacing Assistant on your entire Android phone . Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Even when you use the upcoming switch in the app, you’ll encounter a page asking for permission to switch from Assistant to Gemini. If you’ve already opted in to using Gemini before, you won’t see this permission. The main issue is that no matter how you use Gemini on your Android device, it will replace Assistant.
Android users will soon see a Gemini switch within the Google app on their devices. This is similar to how Google offers Gemini in its iOS app . With the switch within the app, you can initiate an interaction with the AI Assistant by typing, speaking, or sharing an image. This essentially moves you away from Google’s traditional Search and Discovery UI.

The new option in the Google app for Android actually makes sense for users who want to try out Gemini but don’t want to lose the functionality of Google Assistant. Currently, if you download the Gemini app on your Android device, you have to choose to remove Google Assistant and use only Gemini as the primary AI assistant on your phone. A toggle for using Gemini within the Google app will overcome this limitation.
There's no word on a release date for the Gemini feature in the Google app for Android, but thanks to the above video shared by the tipster, you can see how it would work.
