Netflix's decision to terminate billing through Apple iTunes signals the change in the subscription industry.
Netflix confirms to The Verge that it has begun dropping old subscribers from its Apple iTunes billing plans and will require them to pay Netflix directly using a credit or debit card instead. Earlier today, The Streamable reported that Netflix had begun notifying customers in “some regions,” but Netflix spokesperson Momo Zhao confirms to us that all “basic plan members who used an iTunes payment method” will have to sign up directly.

It was a good time for those who signed up before Netflix stopped accepting subscriptions through Apple's payment system. One person told X today that it kept the old price of $9.99 for years.
Unfortunately, if you are like this person, you will now have to join the rest of us and either accept a price increase of over $5 for essentially the same plan you have had for years or pay $3 less than you have paid so far and let the ads wash over you. Or you can take time to think about your relationship with streaming services, which seem to be getting increasingly expensive.

The change marks the end of a long saga — although Apple added subscription options to its iPhone in 2010, Netflix didn’t add them to its iOS app until 2015 because it was opposed to Apple’s 30% cut. In 2018, Netflix decided it didn’t want to pay Apple at all, ditching in-app subscriptions altogether, and never looked back.
