Apple has announced an expansion of its self-service repair program , allowing users of the new iPhone 15 and MacBook owners (powered by M2) to repair their devices themselves. But perhaps most interesting is the launch of “ Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair ,” which will help users who want to repair their device “ test devices for optimal functionality and component performance, as well as identify which components may need repair .”
The web-based diagnostics tool is now available in the U.S. To use it, users put the affected device into diagnostics mode, enter its serial number on a secondary device, and then follow Apple's instructions. Available tests include checking the device's hardware and software version and identifying problems with the display (including pixel anomalies and multi-touch issues), camera, Face ID, and audio output .

Apple says these diagnostic tools are intended “for users with knowledge and expertise in repairing Apple devices,” but will also give them access to the same testing capabilities as the company’s authorized service providers.
As we mentioned above, Apple is expanding its self-service repair program to more iPhones and Macs, including more models based on the M2 chip. An expansion was made in June but only included the M2 MacBook Air 13-inch and MacBook Pro. Now, however, the program covers a wide range of M2-powered computers, including the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, the 15-inch MacBook Air, the Mac Mini, Mac Pro, and Mac Studio.

Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair is currently only available in the US and will expand to Europe in 2024.
With the self-service repair program, Apple is offering more freedom and autonomy to its users. Instead of having to go to an authorized repair center or send their device to Apple, users can repair their devices themselves. This allows them to save time and money, as they no longer have to pay for a device to be repaired or replaced.
