Production of OLED displays planned for the next-generation iPad Pro will begin in February 2024, reports the Korea Herald.

Sources familiar with the matter told the Korea Herald that LG Display is set to begin OLED production for the new iPad Pro next February at its factory in Paju, Gyeonggi Province — a timeline about three months earlier than expected. The displays are expected to be three times more expensive than those used in iPhones, which could translate into higher prices for customers. The information largely aligns with a report from last week.
The current 11-inch version of the iPad Pro is equipped with an LCD display, while the 12.9-inch version features mini-LED backlighting for increased brightness and a higher contrast. OLED technology will eliminate the need for backlighting, with benefits including an even higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, low power consumption , and more. It is expected to use very thin hybrid OLED displays with a combination of flexible and rigid materials, which could allow future iPad Pro models to be slightly thinner.

Apple is expected to order about 10 million OLED displays for the iPad in 2024. LG is expected to supply about 60% of the OLED displays, with the rest supplied by Samsung, which is expected to focus only on the 11-inch model. Production of the displays for the next-generation iPad Pro is expected to contribute to LG Displays' financial recovery next year. Currently, LG and Samsung appear to be finalizing price negotiations with Apple.
In addition to OLED display technology, the next-generation iPad Pro models are expected to feature slightly larger displays, the M3 processor , and a redesigned Magic Keyboard accessory.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the new iPad Pro models will be released in the second quarter of 2024, which covers the period from April to June.
