iPhone 15 Pro: Resident Evil Village looks really, really good

In a recent interview with IGN, an Apple executive claimed that the iPhone 15 Pro “will be the best gaming console.” We were skeptical: even though Apple was bragging about the capabilities of the new GPU in the A17 Pro chip and saying that high-fidelity games like Resident Evil Village, the Resident Evil 4 remake, and Death Stranding would be coming to the iPhone 15 Pro, we didn’t think they would run very well in practice.

But after seeing real footage of Resident Evil Village in action on an iPhone 15 Pro, we're starting to believe that Apple's vision isn't as far off as we thought.

You can check out the gameplay in a video from YouTuber Vincent Zhong, starting at 13:48. First, Zhang plays Village on the 15 Pro with a mobile game controller attachment, and the hardware looks pretty decent. But then comes the good part: Zhang connects the phone to an external display and a DualSense controller, and, at least in his video, Resident Evil Village looks closer to the console game's graphical quality than I expected.

I don't think it's going to be a 1:1 match. According to the captions in Zhang's video, the game's resolution is locked at 1560 x 720 and its framerate is "currently" locked at 30fps. And Zhang says the experience has its flaws: "The screen mirroring effect is definitely not as good as on the phone," Zhang says. "It's definitely not as good as the original effect on the game console.".

Still, I can see how connecting your phone to a monitor to stream console-quality games from your iPhone to a big screen could be appealing in a pinch. It could be especially useful when you're traveling or away from your home base. We'll have to wait and see how good the final iOS ports of Village, RE4, and Death Stranding — and whether Apple can convince more developers to bring their games to console-quality on the iPhone — but we're a lot more curious about them than we were last week.

The iPhone 15 Pro’s push for gaming is part of a larger recent focus from Apple on higher-end gaming. For Macs, for example, it introduced a Proton-like tool that can run Windows games. Hopefully this will translate into more games that I can play on the MacBook, but while we wait, at least we can try out Baldur’s Gate 3.
