Animated GIFs became very popular during the early days of the Internet, when slow connection speeds prevented streaming video. However, they are still popular, which is why you might be interested in learning how to make GIFs right on your iPhone.
Share Live Photos as GIFs
Live Photos are images that include a bit of movement. You can view your collection of Live Photos by opening the Photos and going to Albums > Live Photos.
To make sure you're taking a Live Photo when you take a photo, look for the Live Photo icon on or to the side of the projector. It's three circles. If you see a line through the icon, it means the feature is off. Tap it to turn it on.

Turn Live Photos or Videos into GIFs with Shortcuts
If your Live Photos can't be sent as GIFs, you can make your iPhone create a GIF using the Shortcuts. This technique also works for videos. For Live Photos, you'll need to follow the instructions above and choose between the "Loop" or "Bounce" options before you get started.
- To convert a video to a GIF, you will need to trim the clip to the size you want. To do this, find the video in the Photos app and tap “Edit” in the top right corner of the screen. You can now trim the clip. Tap “Done” to save the clip.
- Once your Live Photo or video is ready, you'll need to create a shortcut that will export the Live Photo or video to a GIF and save it to your Photos app.
- To do this, open the Shortcuts on your iPhone.
- Tap the “+” icon in the upper right corner of the screen to create a new workflow.
- Press the “Add Action” button to display a list of categories.
- Search for “GIF” and select “Make GIF” from the results that appear.
- The action will be added to your workflow. Then, tap the “Content” button that appears and select “Shortcut Input” from the list. This is so that the shortcut targets the video or live photo you have open.
- Tap the arrow that appears inside the action to reveal some options, including timing in the “Seconds per Photo” section. There’s also an “Auto Size” option. Disabling Auto Size will result in your GIFs being huge.
- A new action will appear above the “Make GIF” action you added. This allows you to restrict the shortcut to defined media categories and dictate where it appears in the operating system.
- Click on the “Images and XX More” variable and disable the categories you don’t want. For example, you can limit it to Images, Media, and Files.
- Next, tap on the “Nowhere” variable and make sure “Show in Share Sheet” is enabled. This will allow you to enable the shortcut from the “Share” option you see when viewing media.
- Finally, use the search box at the bottom of the screen to search for “quick look” and add a Quick Look action to the end of your workflow. This will preview the GIF you just made and make it easy to share or save the result.

All that’s left to do is give your new shortcut a name and an icon at the top of the screen. Tap “Done” and save the shortcut. It will appear in the Shortcuts app.
To use your new shortcut, find a Live Photo or video and tap the “Share” button. From the list of actions that appears, select the name you gave the shortcut. Your iPhone will convert your media to GIF format. You’ll then see a preview of the GIF.
Use the “Share” button in the bottom left corner to save, share, AirDrop, and more.
