According to the leaks, which reflect ongoing application developments, these Instagram AI agents can answer questions or give advice. Users can choose from thirty different AI personalities, which can also help users write messages.

Other social platforms have launched AI chatbots with mixed results. When Snapchat first launched its My AI chatbot, powered by OpenAI’s GPT technology, the product lacked proper age-rating features. So it ended up telling a journalist using an account registered as a teenager how to cover up the smell of alcohol and weed. Snapchat also recently launched its subscription-based My AI Snaps feature, which lets AI send you AI-generated images. At launch, the product didn’t work very well.

It’s unclear what AI tools Instagram will use to power its chatbots—but as creative AI booms, Meta, Instagram’s parent company, is using these tools in many established aspects of its business, such as ad sales. In May, Meta announced AI Sandbox, which helps advertisers create alternative versions of ads, background images, and image cropping. Additionally, the company unveiled its own AI coding tool called CodeCompose—but it’s not available to the public.

As Instagram travels on its artificial intelligence train, it is also rumored that it is working on a competitor to Twitter. According to leaked information, the app codenamed Barcelona will be a standalone app that will be integrated into Instagram. If these rumors are true, then we should expect Instagram's Twitter clone to arrive this summer.
