Verizon: Laying off 6,000 employees?

Verizon lays off

It's common knowledge that many companies are cutting jobs in the wake of the pandemic to save money and navigate the tough economic times. Following the lead of other major tech companies, Verizon is reportedly laying off over 6,000 customer service employees as part of the company's streamlining and restructuring plan .

The company announced its decision in a meeting with all employees. Affected employees appear to have two options:

a) accept a severance package based on their years of service . The package offers two weeks' pay for each year of service.

b) opportunity to explore new job roles within Verizon that focus on customer experience, engagement and technology.

The company has given employees until June 7 to decide what to do. However, it's worth noting that the second option doesn't guarantee a job, and employees will have to wait until June 23 to learn about their future at Verizon.

There are also reports that after the layoffs, Verizon will outsource its customer service to foreign companies. The reasoning is that by outsourcing to countries where labor are significantly lower, Verizon can save more money. The company has even reduced domestic hiring for customer service positions.

The decision to lay off employees comes shortly after Verizon lost 127,000 phone subscribers in the first quarter of 2023. The company missed Wall Street’s earnings expectations for the quarter. In addition, the company’s recent decision to replace premium services like Apple Music and the Disney Bundle with a $10 monthly fee for each selected service may have negatively impacted customers, as subscribers are paying for services that were previously included.

The Verizon layoffs and other layoffs seen over the past year show that the tech is not immune to challenges, and the impact of layoffs can be widespread.
