Apple has restricted the use of ChatGPT and other external AI assistance programs by its employees, as it develops its own similar technology, according to the Wall Street Journal.

According to a document seen by the Wall Street Journal and people familiar with the matter, Apple is concerned that its artificial intelligence tools could leak confidential company data. In addition to ChatGPT, Apple has banned its staff from using GitHub's Copilot, a tool that helps write code with auto-completion.

Many businesses, including banks, financial services, and healthcare institutions, have been hesitant to adopt ChatGPT out of fear that their employees might inadvertently provide sensitive, proprietary information to the chatbot. Samsung banned its employees from using AIlike ChatGPT after discovering that staff had uploaded sensitive source code to the platform. The company is said to be concerned that data transmitted to AI platforms, including Bing and Google Bard, could eventually be exposed to other users. JPMorgan Chase and Verizon have similarly banned the use of these AI tools.
OpenAI has already sold Morgan Stanley a private ChatGPT service that allows its employees to ask questions and analyze the content of thousands of the bank. Microsoft is working on a version of ChatGPT aimed at enterprise customers to address any privacy concerns.

The move comes as Apple is apparently working on its own large-scale language models and AI technologies. The team is headed by senior vice president of Machine Learning and AI Strategy John Giannandrea. Giannandrea, who previously worked at Google , now reports directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook. The Wall Street Journal did not provide further details about what Apple’s AI efforts currently include .
