Geoffrey Hinton: The “godfather of AI” warns of the dangers of artificial intelligence

Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of AI,” is now warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence, even though he himself helped create this technology.

Geoffrey Hinton has joined the list of experts sharing concerns about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. The renowned computer scientist recently left his job at Google to speak out about his concerns.

In an interview with the New York Times, Hinton stressed that it is difficult to prevent artificial intelligence from being used for evil purposes.

He also said he is concerned that future versions of the technology pose a real threat to humanity.

The “godfather of AI” shared his concern “that these things could actually become smarter than humans.” “Some people believed that, but most people thought it was a long way off. And I thought (so did I) that it was a long way off. I thought it was 30 to 50 years or more away. Obviously, I don’t think about that anymore,” he said of the rapid development of artificial intelligence and the dangers that such rapid development poses.

Geoffrey Hinton, now 75, is best known for the rapid development of deep learning, a method that uses mathematical structures called neural networks to extract patterns from huge data.

Like other experts, he believes that the competitive "race" between major technology to develop stronger artificial intelligence will evolve on a global scale.

Hinton wrote on Twitter that he believes Google has acted responsibly in developing artificial intelligence, but stressed that he had to leave the company to speak out.

Jeff Dean, senior vice president of Google Research and AI, said: “Geoff has made fundamental discoveries in artificial intelligence, and we appreciate his contributions to Google for a decade. I have deeply enjoyed our many conversations over the years. I will miss him and wish him well! As one of the first companies to publish “Principles of Artificial Intelligence,” we remain committed to a responsible approach to artificial intelligence. We are constantly learning to understand emerging risks, while boldly innovating.”

The addition of Geoffrey Hinton to the list of experts warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence is a notable addition considering his experience and years of work on this technology.

Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin, the co-founders of the Center for Humane Technology, recently gave an interview, citing their own concerns about artificial intelligence.

What we want is AI that enriches our lives. AI that works for people, that works for human benefit that helps us cure cancer, that helps us find solutions for climate,” Harris said during the interview. “We can do that. We can have AI and research labs that are applied to specific areas. But when we’re in an arms race to deploy AI to every person on the planet as quickly as possible with as little testing as possible, that’s not an equation that’s going to end well.”

Also, an open letter from the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, signed by 19 current and former leaders of the academic community, was released last month warning the public about the dangers surrounding artificial intelligence and the need to work together to mitigate these concerns.

We believe that AI will increasingly change the game in healthcare, climate, education, engineering, and many other areas,” the letter said. “At the same time, we recognize the limitations and concerns about AI advances, including the potential for AI systems to make mistakes, provide biased recommendations, threaten our privacy, empower bad actors with new tools, and impact jobs .

Geoffrey Hinton, along with scientists Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun, won the Turing in 2019 for their achievements in artificial intelligence.

Hinton, Bengio and LeCun have been open about their concerns about artificial intelligence, but they were optimistic about the technology's potential. Now it seems the godfather of AI has his doubts...

Artificial intelligence is an innovation that has changed the way we live. With its development and use, we have already seen progress in various fields, such as medicine, education, transportation, and research. However, artificial intelligence, like any other technology, carries some risks. It is important to examine and address these risks so that we can only get the good from this revolutionary technology.
