Resident Evil 4 Remake: Mercenary Mode released

Designed to be released on April 7, some players in Korea appear to report that they have early access to the Mercenary mode of the Resident Evil 4 Remake. Unfortunately, some also say that this mode currently lacks significant content.

A staple of the Resident Evil games, Mercenary mode is an arcade-style horde mode where players battle against waves of infected for the highest score. The original Resident Evil 4 allowed players to unlock Mercenary mode upon completing the campaign, but the remake has taken a different path, as Capcom has announced that the mode will debut on April 7th.

Players have noticed that those who have access to the aforementioned area are missing two key players, Ada Wong and Albert Wesker, who were both in the previous version of the feature and were expected to be in the remake. This has led to speculation that Capcom may offer the characters as purchasable content in the future.

This would verify the reports of microtransactions appearing in this mode, as players have started spotting them in online stores in the form “upgrade tickets” which would give players the ability for faster progress by playing in the Mercenary mode.

Resident Evil 4 Remake upgrade tickets

The item descriptions for Upgrade Tickets read: «present your ticket for the weapons show! A ticket for redemption specifically at the Merchant store. With this you will have access to an exclusive weapon upgrade whenever you want, regardless of the weapon's level. Not only that, but once you unlock it, the upgrade is free!»

As a single-player mode, this "pay-to-win" model may prove less controversial than those used in competitive multiplayer games, but the omission of two key characters may be quite disappointing for some.
