The feature allows users to transfer not only the game, but also all updates that have come out since its release.
Transferring 'files' between computers or a Steam Deck via Local Network, eliminates the need to download from the already overloaded Steam servers.
This makes it faster to play on the second device and reduces internet traffic, resulting in faster installation or update.

A common use case would be a home setup with multiple computers or Steam Decks on the same network.

Once a game is installed on one computer, all other computers or the Steam Deck can install or update the game, transferring the files directly between the computers.

By default, this feature only works between Steam users who are logged into the same account.

However, it is possible to enable the ability to transfer games locally and to different users.
Before downloading or updating a game, the Steam client will check if there are other computers with the Steam client installed (on the same network) that could transfer the game content directly to the user.

If found, Steam will ask the backend server to notify the second computer's PC and start the file transfer (if transfers via Local Network are enabled).

Settings
There are four settings to specify which other computers and Steam clients can be used to transfer game files.
These settings are bidirectional and to allow local transfers in, local transfers out are automatically enabled.

The default option is “Only my own devices“, which means that users can only transfer “in and out” from computers that are logged in with their own account.
The other options are “Off”, “Only my friends ” and “Any user”.

Requirements
There are a few requirements that must be met before a local transfer can take place.
– Both users must be online and can see each other directly on the same local network.
– The game file transfer settings on both devices must allow the transfer.
– Game content can only be transferred out if the Steam client performing the transfer is idle.
– The game must have been released to the public and be playable by both users.
– The game must be updated on the computer sending the files.

Overall, this feature is a significant development that will save time and reduce internet traffic for Steam users who want to play their favorite games on multiple devices.
