Instagram: Has the end of the platform finally come?

One of the most popular Social Media of recent years, Instagram, has been showing signs of slowing down lately.

There is a big difference between simply having an Instagram account and actually using it. Posting photos online has become frowned upon because people feel like it is a waste of time. When they do this without caring about others, it is like yelling into their phone in a public place and ignoring those around them.

In other words, we're sick of Instagram. It's kind of like the feeling you get when your romantic partner or a friend does something small but noticeable that instantly turns you off forever.

As is always the case, things were going well for Instagram until they didn’t. The problem came completely out of the blue and without warning. In 2014, the app surpassed Twitter in monthly active users for the first time with 300 million. Instagram Stories, which was introduced in August 2016 as a copycat of Snapchat, had more users than the original app within a year. Even though Instagram now has two billion monthly users, it’s on the verge of collapse due to a glaring problem: What will happen when its core user base—young 18- to 29-year-olds in America—starts to get too old for the app or find something else to do?

Last year, the New York Times reported that Instagram was particularly concerned about attracting and retaining young users to grow its long-term user base—not to mention how much potential revenue those new users from advertisers. Among young American teens, TikTok is already more popular. In addition, a series of algorithm changes—and some copycat attempts to copy features from other apps—have discouraged many of its users.

Those frustrations peaked over the summer. A new update that supposedly gave users algorithmically recommended videos that would take up the entire screen was too much of a change. Users of the app were frustrated with the way the app was changing to look more like TikTok, emphasizing videos and recommended posts over photos.
