Did you know that you can improve the overall appearance of your Google Docsby adding an image to the background? Here's how to do it:
How to add or change a watermark image background
To add a background image to Google Docs, you can use the Watermark feature. With it, you can cover each page of document and adjust the transparency of the image.
- Open your document, select the “Insert” and select “Watermark”.
- When the Watermark sidebar opens, confirm that you are on the Image. Then click “Select Image.”
- Locate, select, and import your image. You can upload a photo, use your camera to take a new photo, enter a URL, or choose a photo from Google Drive, Photos, or Images.
- You will see the image appear as a watermark in your Google Docs document. It will also appear in the Watermark sidebar.
- In the sidebar, you can use the Scale to make the image larger or smaller. To remove transparency, uncheck the box for Faded.
- You can also make other adjustments by going to “More Image Options.” There, you can change the brightness, contrast, size, or rotate the image.
- When you're finished making changes, select “Done” to save the background to the document in Google Docs.

The image becomes part of the background of the document in Google Docs, so you can add text, insert tables, and continue creating your document as normal. The background will not be affected.
If you want to edit the image later, double-click on the background and select “Edit Watermark” that appears at the bottom of the page. This will open the sidebar again to make your changes or remove the watermark.
How to insert, resize and lock an image background?
The main disadvantage of the Watermark feature is that it applies the selected image to all pages of your document. If you want to change your background for just one page, use the Insert.
Go to Insert > Image and choose the location of the image from the pop-up menu. Navigate to the image, select it, and select “Insert.”

Image resizing
The image may not fit the page properly in Google Docs. To resize it while maintaining the original proportions of the image, grab a corner of the image and drag it. If you don't mind losing the proportions, feel free to drag any edge of the image to make it bigger or smaller.

Alternatively, select “Image Options” in the toolbar, open the Size & Rotation , and enter the size you want in the Size.
Place the image behind the text
Next, you may want to place the image behind the text in your Google Docs document. Select the image and select the Behind Text icon in the floating toolbar below it.
You can also click “Image Options” on the top toolbar to open the sidebar. Open the Text Wrapping and select “Behind Text”.

Lock the image position
Finally, you need to “lock” the image’s position on the page in Google Docs so that it doesn’t move when you add text or other elements. Select the image and choose “Fix Position on Page” from the drop-down box in the floating toolbar.
Note: You will not see this drop-down box in the toolbar until you select the “Behind Text” icon, as described above.
Alternatively, click “Image Options” on the top toolbar, open the Position section, and click the “Fix Position on Page” option.

Additional customizations
You can adjust your image until it looks exactly how you want it to. You can make the image more transparent, change the brightness, or recolor it.
Select the image you want as the background in your Google Docs document, and then click “Image Options” in the top toolbar. The Recolor and Adjustments in the sidebar can be used to make your changes.
To remove the background later, select the image and press the Delete or right-click and select “Delete”.
