Samsung SmartThings platform gains Matter support

With the addition of Matter support, Samsung's SmartThings platform becomes even more flexible.

Samsung is making it easy for users to control all their smart devices, regardless of brand – as long as the device is Matter certified. The company will update the SmartThings hub and mobile app so that users can manage any Matter-compatible smart device through Smartthings. This way, anyone with a SmartThings system can add new compatible devices without worrying about compatibility issues.

Samsung SmartThings issue

Samsung's SmartThings platform now has support for Matter

The goal of the new smart home protocol, Matter, is to solve the problem of outdated interoperability. Currently, we have many different smart home platforms with very few devices that can work for more than one platform. This makes it difficult for buyers, because they have to choose a device based on its limitations, not on what will best needs . You should be able to buy any device without having to check if it is compatible with everything else first.

With Matter, you no longer have to buy multiple devices that only work with one smart home ecosystem. A Matter- certified device is guaranteed to be compatible with all major ecosystems, including Samsung's SmartThings, Google Home, Amazon's Alexa, Apple's HomeKit, and more. Many smart home companies have promised support for the new Matter protocol, but not many have adopted it yet. However, key partner and developer Samsung is already on board.

Samsung SmartThings platform gains Matter support

Earlier this year, the Korean company announced its support for opening an early access program to select partners. The second and third generation SmartThings Hub and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub will initially gain support for Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread-based Matter devices. All products will continue to support Zigbee, Z-Wave, LAN (Local Area Network) devices, including Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

For those who aren’t familiar: Samsung SmartThings is an app that lets you control various devices and appliances in your home from your smartphone. You can use the app to turn your lights on/off, adjust your thermostat, view live footage from your security cameras, and more. The Samsung SmartThings app is IoT – a network of devices that connect to each other and can share data and information. By connecting devices together, we can create a “smart home.”
