Gurman: Apple Touch ID won't be returning to iPhones anytime soon

Apple is said to have considered bringing back Touch ID for its top-of-the-line iPhone models, but despite testing, it's unlikely that the feature will return to the main smartphone anytime soon.

The switch from Touch ID to Face ID has many advantages (and some disadvantages). However, there is a segment of users who still prefer Touch ID. Nevertheless, it seems that Apple will not abandon Face ID in the next generations of iPhones.

In Sunday’s “ Power On ” newsletter for Bloomberg, Mark Gurman , a well-known Apple analyst, writes that the company has been in discussions about reviving and bringing back Touch ID to high -end. iPhones Apple is also said to have been testing in- Touch ID screen . There have been reports of such a feature, but that feature never made it into the final product. There have also been reports of a test adding Touch ID to a power button, like on the iPad Air 4, but that didn’t materialize either.

“At this point, I believe Face ID is here to stay and Touch ID will not return to the top-end iPhones – at least not in the immediate future,” Gurman writes.

According to Gurman, it's unlikely that we'll see the upcoming iPhone 15 with Touch ID. However, he suggests that the Touch ID power button could still be used on models like the iPhone SE.

A few words about Apple 's Touch ID

Touch ID is an electronic fingerprint recognition designed and released by Apple Inc. This feature allows users to unlock devices, make purchases in various Apple digital media stores (iTunes Store, App Store , and Apple Books Store) , and authenticate Apple Pay online or in applications. It can also be used to lock and unlock passcode-protected notes on iPhone and iPad. Touch ID was first introduced in the iPhone 5S in 2013. In 2015, Apple introduced a faster second-generation Touch ID in the iPhone 6S. In 2016, it was added to a laptop for the first time, specifically the MacBook Pro. Touch ID has been used on all iPads since the iPad Air 2 was introduced in 2014.

Apple retained Touch ID on the iPhone 8, iPhone SE 2nd generation, iPhone SE 3rd generation, and the base iPad models, while all other iPhones since the 2017 iPhone X and the higher-end iPad Pro have adopted Face ID. The 4th and 5th generation iPad Air and the 6th generation iPad Mini incorporate a Touch ID sensor in the top button. In 2020, 2021, and 2022, Apple introduced a new line of iMacs, Mac Studios with Studio Display, and Mac minis that can be configured with Touch ID on the Magic Keyboard.
