A better view for your widgets in Windows 11 is finally here thanks to a recent Insider build available for download.

If you're a member of the Windows Insider program on the Developer Channel (which lets you install Windows 11 updates that consist of features that are in testing), you can try out a new view of widgets where they cover your desktop in build 25201.

Widgets are all the rage right now, with Google and Apple implementing them in new and different ways to help us manage important information at a glance. For now, the iPhone 14 features them as a main feature on the lock screen, but there's a lot of untapped potential on desktop PCs, something Apple hasn't done yet in macOS Ventura.
This is likely why we're seeing widgets improve in Windows 11, not just to get there first but to do it in a way that makes sense for the operating system on desktops and laptops.
Widgets in Windows have been around since Windows Vista, when they were called “Gadgets.” They were eventually abandoned by Microsoft once Windows 8 arrived as they weren’t very functional .
It looks like widgets will be returning to Windows 11 with the upcoming major update. It's telling that Microsoft is already working on improving how widgets work and look. With macOS Ventura scheduled to launch in October without any improvements to widgets on the Mac , it's an opportunity for Microsoft to set the standard for how widgets work on a PC .

Granted, we may see this feature delayed for a future update, like the “Moment” release, but it’s encouraging to see progress for widgets already and that Microsoft isn’t willing to put them on the back burner again.
