Apple said last week that it would release a software update to iPhone 13 devices to make it easier to replace their screens without breaking Face ID, but it didn't specify when that update might arrive. Luckily, we may not have to wait long, as repair experts say they've successfully completed easier screen replacements on iPhone 13 devices running the iOS 15.2 beta.

Before the update, keeping Face ID working after changing screens also required moving a microcontroller from the original phone to the new one. That's a complicated process , and having to do it for every iPhone 13 that needs a new screen could make things difficult for independent repair shops. But on an iPhone 13 running iOS 15.2 beta, iCorrect says Face ID still worked after a screen change and without having to move the microcontroller.

While Face ID still works, the iPhone 13 that has a screen replacement displays an “Important Message” warning that the device cannot verify that the screen is a “genuine Apple part,” even though iCorrect says the screen is indeed a genuine part. However, this is not unusual for Apple, which displays similar warnings on some iPhones after battery replacements by unauthorized repair shops.

Apple has yet to comment on whether iOS 15.2 will allow for screen switching without breaking Face ID, but since screen switching appears to be working in the beta, it's likely that it will work in the final release.
