iPhone vs Android users: Who sells or trades in their device more often?

Just before the official launch of the iPhone 13, a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) sheds light on “what’s happening to old smartphones.” In fact, the research includes data on the number of iPhone users who sell or trade-in their devices compared to Android device owners.

It's worth mentioning that the research was based on the US, so the results may not apply to other regions.

First, based on research, used iPhones are usually in better condition compared to used Android phones. For example, CIRP observed that 65% of iPhones used for 12 months had a good screen, while when we talk about Android smartphones, the percentage drops to less than 60%.

On the other hand, the same doesn't seem to be true for batteries . After a year of use, only 23% of iPhone users reported that their phone's battery lasted a full day without recharging. In contrast, 30% of Android users were able to use their smartphone all day without charging, even after 12 months.

Furthermore, according to the survey, very few devices become useless after a year. Less than 10% of Android and iPhone users have completely broken their phones after a year. Also, few notice their battery running out within a few hours (less than 20% of users).

CIRP observed that phones are becoming more durable, so selling or replacing a smartphone is being delayed.

However, there are those who change their phone without any major problems. Most phones that are retired are in good condition, with problem-free screens and batteries that last most of the day. As a result, many iPhones and Android smartphones are sold or traded in, given to friends or relatives, or stored for possible future use.

But what happens to people who change their device every year?

According to CIRP research, less than 10% of iPhone or Android users sell their old phones, although iPhones are sold more often. Furthermore, while the vast majority of Android users keep their old smartphones, almost 30% of iPhone owners trade them in as part of trade-in programs.
