How to set up facial recognition on Samsung Galaxy phones

Some smartphones leave fingerprints behind and use facial recognition to unlock their screens. If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, you can probably use both your fingerprint and facial recognition to get into your device.

First, it's important to understand that facial recognition on Android devices isn't as secure as Apple's " Face ID ." iPhones use a variety of sensors to detect faces, while Android devices typically just store a photo of your face.

First, swipe down once from the top of your Samsung Galaxy device's screen and tap the gear icon.

Then, go to the “Biometrics and security” section.

Select “Face Recognition”.

If you have already enabled some kind of security method (PIN, pattern, etc.), you will be asked to enter it now.

You will see some introductory information about facial recognition. Tap “Continue” to continue with the setup.

First, you will be asked if you wear glasses. Select “Yes” or “No” accordingly and click “Continue”.

The next step is to register your face. Hold the camera at the height of your face.

Once your face is scanned, you’ll have the option to require a scan on the lock screen even if your face is detected. This is a way to ensure your phone doesn’t immediately go past the lock screen if you don’t want it to. Toggle it on or off and tap “Done.”

If you want, you can tap “Add alternate appearance” to scan your face one more time.

There are also many additional options on the “Face Recognition” page:

Faster recognition: Allows for faster unlocking but could be tricked more easily.

Require eyes open: For extra security, eyes must be open to unlock the device.

Bright screen: To help in low-light conditions, the screen will light up to scan your face.

When you see the lock icon at the top of the lock screen unlock, you will know it was successfully detected.
