Huawei ’s next flagship smartphone , the P50 , will be released on July 29 , the company announced on its Weibo and Twitter accounts. Writing on his Weibo page, Huawei’s consumer group CEO Richard Yu said the new smartphone will mark the beginning of a “ new era of mobile imaging .” The comment was interpreted by many as a sign that Huawei will once again focus on cameras , which could set the Chinese company’s flagship model apart.

US sanctions imposed on the company on national security have severely affected Huawei's ability to produce its own Kirin chipsets. The company has been struggling for the past two years due to these sanctions, and many feared that the launch of new flagship devices would not be possible. "For reasons that you all know, there is no release date set," Yu said when announcing the design of the Huawei P50 during an event last month.

These chip challenges, combined with sanctions against the company that, among other things, prohibit Huawei from pre-installing Google apps and services on its devices, have eroded Huawei’s market share. The Chinese company failed to make the top five smartphone vendors in the second quarter of this year (while it was the largest vendor in the same quarter last year). Even in its home market of China, Oppo surpassed it to become the country’s most popular smartphone brand in January.
