Twitter and Instagram are getting closer with a new feature that the former's app offers to iOS users. Specifically, Twitter's iOS app has been updated to allow users to quickly and easily share tweets to their Instagram Story, as the company itself said in a related announcement .

This feature works using an iOS share sheet: all you have to do is tap the share icon below any tweet and select “Instagram Stories” from the list of apps. When you transfer the tweet to Instagram, you can resize it, reposition it, and “decorate” it with the image service’s standard selection of text, stickers, music, and annotations.

Of course, you've always had the option to take screenshots of tweets and manually upload them to an Instagram Story. But the new interface makes the process much easier and the results are more satisfying. However, the feature seems to work best on text and image-based tweets for now. In cases where it was tested on a tweet with an embedded video, Instagram inserted it as a static image.

While it's now easier to share tweets on Instagram, it's still difficult to do the reverse, i.e. share Instagram content on Twitter. Posting an Instagram link to Twitter still appears as a plain URL, without a preview card. The functionality disappeared in 2012 and shows no sign of returning, at least not anytime soon.

The official Twitter and Instagram Stories integration follows a similar feature added to Snapchat last year. As with the Snapchat integration, Twitter is currently only making the new sharing feature available to iOS users, and has not said when it will be available to Android users.
