Google announced the new feature Tuesday at its I/O software conference, part of a package of privacy controls the Alphabet Inc. is rolling out to reassure consumers and regulators. Users can now tap a tab in their Google accounts to remove the last 15 minutes of their search history. The company offers a feature to clear search history, but users have found the data useful for tools like the Maps app or are unaware of the option to delete it.

The new ways to give users more privacy controls come after years of criticism of the giant search company's behavior.
“We never sell your personal information to anyone,” Jen Fitzpatrick, a senior vice president at Google, said at the virtual event. “Such an act is simply out of bounds.”

During the event, Google also introduced new tools for password protection and data permissions for its Android software. “Nobody else offers this kind of technically enforced and verifiable privacy,” Fitzpatrick added. Apple Inc. has for years said iPhones are far more secure than devices running Google’s Android operating system.
