NBA: Houston Rockets targeted by ransomware gang!

The Houston Rockets are investigating a cyberattack in which malicious actors attempted to install ransomware on the team's internal systems. team said the organization is currently working closely with the FBIin an ongoing investigation into the security incident.

"The Houston Rockets organization recently identified suspicious activity on certain systems on its internal network. We immediately began an investigation," a spokesperson for the basketball team said in an emailed statement, adding that cybersecurity experts are assisting with the incident.

"Our internal security tools prevented the installation of the ransomware, with the exception of a few systems that did not affect our operations," the statement also said.

The Houston Rockets also stated on April 14 that they had heard reports that the hackers behind this cyberattack claimed to have obtained internal business information from the team.

Additionally, the NBA basketball team stated the following: “While the investigation is ongoing, the incident had no impact on our operations or our ability to care for our fans, employees and players.”

However, the team noted that it is difficult to determine the extent and potential impact of the security incident until the investigation is complete.

The Houston Rockets also added that they will notify anyone who may have been affected if they find personal information exposed.

Bloomberg reported on April 14 that a hacking group called “Babuk” claimed to have stolen 500 gigabytes of data from the Houston Rockets, including contracts, non-disclosure agreements and financial data.

Babuk was discovered earlier this year and has already breached at least five major businesses, according to reports. In one case, the victim paid an $85,000 ransom after negotiations, Bloomberg reported, citing data collected from McAfee security researchers.
