Hyundai is set to launch 23 electric vehicles by 2025, and today we get to see the first of them: the Ioniq 5, a new electric compact crossover vehicle that made its debut in South Korea. The Ioniq 5 features a futuristic design and fast-charging capability.
The Ioniq 5 draws much of its design from the Hyundai 45 concept, including its overall shape with its sharp, angular lines, pixelated taillights, and unique daytime running lights.
The Ioniq 5 is based on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that will underpin future electric vehicles from both Hyundai and Kia. The Ioniq 5 will be available with a range of electric powertrains to suit your needs. This means you can choose between two battery packs, 58 kWh and 72.6 kWh, and two electric drivetrains: one with just one rear electric motor on the rear wheels, and one with two electric motors – one on each axle – which also offers the benefit of all-wheel drive.
The battery will also take much less time to charge compared to its competitors, with charging times similar to those of the Porsche Taycan and the new Audi e-tron GT. Like those sedans, the Ioniq 5 has an 800-V operating voltage, and when connected to a 350 kW charger, the Hyundai’s battery can go from 5% to 80% in 18 minutes. The Porsche Taycan takes 22.5 minutes to do the same.
As mentioned above, the Ioniq 5 can be used with either two electric motors or all-wheel drive. In all-wheel drive form, the 72.6 kWh battery produces a combined power of 225 kWh and 605 Nm of torque. In this case, 0-100 km/h comes in just 5.2 seconds.
The Ioniq 5 also comes with Highway Driver Assist 2 (HDA 2), a level 2 driver assistance system. HDA 2 allows the Ioniq 5 to drive on the highway with minimal driver intervention – it automatically changes lanes.
The interior of the Ioniq 5 matches the modern design of the exterior. The front seats recline and have footrests for use when charging the vehicle. These and many other parts in the cabin are made from recycled plastics, wool, eco-treated leather and other sustainable sources. The instrument cluster and infotainment screen are mounted on a single frame that extends from the front of the driver to the middle of the vehicle.
The head-up display in the Ioniq 5 is augmented by augmented reality, meaning information like navigation can be projected onto the windshield in the driver's line of sight. While we're not sure exactly what this will look like in the Ioniq 5, Hyundai has announced an investment in WayRay, a startup that integrates augmented reality into head-up displays. The Ioniq 5 could be the realization of that investment.
Other technologies in the Ioniq 5 include a solar roof, a feature seen in the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, and what Hyundai calls Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) mode, a charging system that can provide up to 3.6 kilowatts. That's enough to charge and power many household appliances.
The Ioniq 5 is the first vehicle in a new electric lineup from Hyundai. The Ioniq 6, a sedan, and the Ioniq 7, an SUV, are expected in 2022 and 2024, respectively, and will expand the full-electric Ioniq lineup. The Ioniq 5 is set to go on sale in the U.S. in the fall.
