Jaguar has announced that it will only build electric cars , likely starting in 2025, as part of its broader “Reimagine” strategy. According to the company, the Jaguar brand will be completely electric by then. There won’t even be any hybrid models. Meanwhile, the Land Rover (also owned by Jaguar Land Rover) will also begin a shift towards electrification, with six new models coming over the next five years, starting in 2024. Land Rover estimates that 60% of the cars it sells by 2030 will be electric, and that all Jaguar Land Rover models will be available in “electric variants” by the end of the decade.
Three platforms compatible with electric motors will be used. Land Rover will use one called EMA (electric modular architecture) for electric models and another called MLA (modular longitudinal architecture) for its hybrids. Land Rover currently has three SUV families, the Range Rover, Discovery and Defender. However, it has not yet said which one will be the first to go electric.
Jaguar, on the other hand, will use a new “pure electric architecture” for its upcoming vehicles and will abandon the planned top-of-the-line XJ limousine.
Jaguar hasn't given many details about its strategy for its upcoming electric models and how they will change the existing ones. It seems likely that current gas-powered vehicles and hybrids, such as the XE, XF, E-Pace, and F-Pace, will be dropped and replaced by their electric versions.
Jaguar will invest $3 billion in the new strategy, the company said in a statement , and has already set aside $48.7 million to pay fines for failing to meet the EU’s 2020 emissions reduction target. The company is also working on hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles and plans to begin testing them later this year. Jaguar Land Rover CEO Thierry Bolloré said the strategy would emphasize “quality over volume.” He also said the company has no plans to close any of its car factories in the UK or elsewhere.
