Patch Tuesday February 2021: Microsoft fixes 56 vulnerabilities

Microsoft released the February 2021 Patch Tuesday yesterday , which fixes 56 vulnerabilities, of which 11 have been rated "critical", 43 as "serious" and 2 as "moderate".

Among the vulnerabilities fixed with Microsoft Patch Tuesday is a zero-day bug, as well as six vulnerabilities that were disclosed a short time ago.

The zero-day vulnerability, which was already being exploited by cybercriminals , is known as “CVE-2021-1732 – Windows Win32k Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability” and allows an attacker or malicious program to gain administrator privileges on the vulnerable device. The zero-day was discovered by researchers at DBAPPSecurity Co., Ltd.

Other vulnerabilities that were previously disclosed and fixed with Microsoft's February Patch Tuesday include:

  • CVE-2021-1721 -. NET Core and Visual Studio Denial of Service
  • CVE-2021-1727 – Windows Installer Elevation of Privilege
  • CVE-2021-1733 – Sysinternals PsExec Elevation of Privilege
  • CVE-2021-24098 – Windows Console Driver Denial of Service
  • CVE-2021-24106 – Windows DirectX Information Disclosure
  • CVE-2021-26701 – .NET Core Remote Code Execution

Additionally, Microsoft has fixed the CVE-2021-24105 vulnerability in the Azure Artifactory product that was discovered when researchers used it in a PoC attack against Microsoft systems.

Thanks to this vulnerability, attackers can create malicious public packages, which have the same name as internal packages used by internal corporate applications. When creating applications , the malicious packages will be used instead of the internal ones, allowing a supply chain attack.

This attack affected many companies: Microsoft, Apple, PayPal, Shopify, Netflix, Tesla, Yelp, and Uber.
