The Starlink satellite internet service of SpaceX now has more than 10,000 users, the company said. In a filing to the Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday, Elon Musk's Starlink said its network already provides internet speeds of 100/20Mbps or higher.
“Starlink’s performance is not theoretical or experimental,” the filing says. “More than 10,000 users in the United States and abroad are using the service today.”
SpaceX aims to improve internet speeds with its Starlink satellite service. It sends thousands of small satellites into orbit, forming constellations of flying routers that beam connectivity back to Earth.
Earlier on Thursday, SpaceX sent another 60 flying routers into space to deploy a broader Starlink service, with more routers scheduled to be launched into space on Friday.
The FCC in December awarded SpaceX nearly $885.5 million as part of a program to bring high-speed to rural areas in the U.S.The first phase of the FCC Rural Digital Opportunity Fund auction awarded SpaceX 642,925 sites to serve 35 states.
