International law firm Seyfarth Shaw announced yesterday that it was hit by a ransomware attack over the weekend. With more than 900 lawyers in 17 offices in the Americas, Europe and Asia, the firm had over $700 million in gross revenue in 2019 and is ranked among the top 100 law firms in the world.
The ransomware attack took place last Saturday, with Seyfarth Shaw describing it as a “sophisticated and dangerous malware.” The timing is typical for cyberattacks, especially ransomware, given that companies have fewer employees working on weekends.
In its official announcement about the attack, the international law firm stated that, to its knowledge, many other entities were simultaneously "hit" by the same ransomware attack.
Seyfarth Shaw said systems detected the unauthorized activity and its IT department immediately stopped the spread of the malware. However, the law firm explained that these steps did not prevent the encryption of files on many of its systems. As a result, the encrypted computers were taken out of service as a precaution.
Seyfarth Shaw also stressed that its customers remain its top priority and will continue to do whatever is necessary to protect their confidential information while continuing to provide services to them. It added that it is cooperating with the FBI and working around the clock to bring its systems back online as quickly and securely.
It's unclear at this time how devastating this ransomware attack was, but Seyfarth Shaw noted that it has not found any evidence to suggest that the attackers accessed or stole any customer or company data
