Cybercriminals are attacking healthcare targets with a new and dangerous Windows ransomware campaign.
In early March, we warned you about a new Windows ransomware threat that was sneaking around and not easily detected. That threat was NetWalker and is now being used by cybercriminal groups , who truly deserve the nickname cyberscum, as the payload of phishing attacks . The phishing attacks are targeting those in the healthcare sector
Cybercriminal groups continue to exploit the COVID-19 coronavirus to make money.
Some cybercriminal groups have promised not to target healthcare organizations during the current coronavirus crisis . But these DoppelPaymer and Maze ransomware groups have not said they will stop attacking everyone else. Cybercriminal groups are driven by greed and will use any method they can to make the most profit . This was very evident, as the FBI confirmed when it warned of a significant increase in COVID-19 scams, with people living in areas with high coronavirus infection rates being more likely to be targeted.
NetWalker's new campaign uses coronavirus as bait to attract healthcare workers
According to Bleeping Computer, this new NetWalker campaign was spotted by MalwareHunterTeam. NetWalker is the latest variant of the well-known Mailto ransomware threat. It is known for attacking mainly government organizations and business targets. However, according to Vitali Kremez, head of SentinelLabs and an expert in investigating complex cybercrime circuits, the new NetWalker campaign is not only using emails related to the coronavirus (Coronavirus), but is also actively attacking targets in the healthcare sector. This should not come as a big surprise, as NetWalker already hit the Champaign Urbana Public Health Department (CHUPD) in Illinois earlier this month.
