If you have the skills, Go, Scala, and Ruby are the programming languages that will most likely land you a job interview, although JavaScript, Python, and Java are the languages most used by programmers.
According to data from recruitment firm Hired, Go was the most in-demand language last year, offering an average of 9.2 interviews over a two- to six-week period.
Scala was the second most in demand (8.5 interviews) followed by Ruby (8.2) and TypeScript (7.9).
The number of interview applications across all languages remained roughly flat year-over-year, Hired said, with no change in how each language ranks relative to others. “This could suggest that supply for these skills has not yet caught up with demand, and we could see an upward trend in applications as more engineers learn Go,” the recruitment firm said.
In its 2020 Software Engineers Report, Hired said the most in-demand programming language varies by experience: If you’re a developer with four to six years of experience, Go skills will land you the most interviews, but Ruby engineers with six to 10 years of experience are also in high demand. Developers with more than 10 years of experience are at the top of the pyramid if they have Scala and Go skills. The company noted that software engineers with 10 or more years of experience receive 20% fewer interview opportunities than those with four to 10.
There is a big gap between what employers are looking for and the languages that developers feel comfortable with. JavaScript is used by 63% of developers surveyed, followed by Python (44%) and Java (38%). Hirers said these languages are favored because of their useful and well-maintained libraries and packages. Kotlin, Objective-C and R are among the least used languages. Python ,JavaScript and Java were considered the most popular, with Ruby, PHP and Objective-C the least popular.
According to Hired, the fastest-growing roles in the tech industry include artificial and virtual reality, games and innovation. Blockchain engineer – the fastest-growing role last year – has fallen off the charts, likely reflecting how the once-popular technology has fallen out of fashion. The recruitment firm said the data came from more than 400,000 interview applications and job offers from the past year, from 10,000 companies and 98,000 job seekers.
