We've suspected Apple is working on an AR headset for some time now. In September, the news was confirmed by Apple itself via the iOS 13 final build released to developers. In a readme available in the build, Apple outlined steps for developers on how to test AR apps without the AR headset. Apple refers to AR headset apps as Stereo AR-enabled apps.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will release an AR headset in the second quarter of 2020. Unlike HoloLens, which is a standalone AR headset, according to Kuo, Apple's AR headset will be released as an accessory for iPhone and iPad.
In a statement today, Apple said it plans to release its AR headset in 2022 and AR glasses in 2023. In an internal presentation to employees, Apple vice president Mike Rockwell, who is responsible for development teams , revealed new information about the design and features of the new product.

- The upcoming headset will include features like 3D scanning and advanced people detection.
- They will be accompanied by a high-resolution screen (possibly 8K).
- There will be cameras that will allow users to see people standing in front of and behind virtual objects.
- Ability to map surfaces, edges, and room dimensions with greater accuracy than current headsets like HoloLens.
- They will look similar to the Oculus Quest, but will be made of lightweight materials for greater comfort.
We assume that Apple could start talking about its AR headset to developers in 2020. Hopefully, Microsoft won't lose its lead in AR headsets despite already starting with HoloLens.
