While the countdown to Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 has already begun, Microsoft has decided to join the tease party. The company has just released a new teaser on YouTube, hinting at the HoloLens 2.
The video, which was also posted on Twitter, by the creator of HoloLens, Alex Kipman, does not say much about the new device but confirms that the HoloLens 2 will be announced soon.
The 42‑second clip does not clearly show what the new AR device can offer. If a conclusion can be drawn from the clip, it is that Microsoft could use carbon fibers as material for building the HoloLens 2, which should theoretically help reduce its weight.
According to a previous report from Engadget, Microsoft will likely use a Qualcomm-designed XR1 chip to power the device, a chip specifically intended for VR and AR devices. The chip supports 4K video at 60 fps, but is also capable of handling video at that resolution along with 3D overlays and directional audio.
Alongside the XR1 chip, Microsoft will also add a custom chip to handle AI functions in the HoloLens 2, where it will visually analyze data on the device and save time by not loading data that is not necessary.
Microsoft also noted that the upcoming device will be significantly more comfortable than the original HoloLens.
According to the teaser, Microsoft's main presentation at MWC 2019 is expected to take place on February 24.
