Microsoft is bringing OneDrive Files On Demand to Apple's macOS, which lets users browse their cloud storage without downloading data.

OneDrive Files On-Demand is one of the top Windows 10 features that uses placeholders to increase speed and reduce data usage.
Placeholders, which are essentially shortcuts to files stored in the cloud, allow files to be downloaded as they are used, without having to retrieve additional data from OneDrive. This way, users no longer have to sync entire folders because of a single file.
OneDrive Files On-Demand has returned to Windows 10, after previously being removed from the operating system. It started in Windows 8 as placeholders.
On macOS, this feature works much the same as it does on Windows 10. Microsoft explains: “OneDrive Files On-Demand helps you access all your files on OneDrive without having to download all your data and use up storage space on your device. When
you turn on Files On-Demand, you’ll see all your files in the Mac Finder and get new information about each file. New files created online or on another device appear as online files only, so they don’t take up space on your device. When you’re connected to the Internet, you’ll be able to use your online files like any other files on your device.”
To use this feature, you need to be running at least macOS 10.14 Mojave, and have a local drive that uses the Apple File System (APFS).
OneDrive Files On-Demand is currently in preview. Microsoft hasn't announced when it will be available to everyone, but users can already try the service by downloading the client from here (direct download link).
However, keep in mind that this is not the final version of the application, so there may still be bugs or other stability issues. More information on how to set up the client is available here .
