Google: 64bit apps only from August 2019

Google announced today that it will allow only the distribution of 64-bit applications on the Play Store from August 2019.

“For applications that use native libraries, 64-bit code usually offers significantly better performance”, the company says on the Blog of the Developers.

We should note that Apple has stopped supporting 32-bit apps on iOS 11 since last September.

The company continues to state that in the future the Android operating system will support only 64-bit apps.

So if you are a developer and your app includes 32‑bit libraries, you must also add 64‑bit libraries inside the APK you upload to the Play Store.

Google's current announcement means that developers who have apps on the Play Store must upgrade them with the necessary additions by August 2019 to stay on the Play Store.

The company also announced that it will soon start adding security metadata that will facilitate the verification of applications, as an additional security measure.
