Flixxo: Popcorn Time creator Federico Abad is part of a new team preparing a YouTube competitor. The new platform is reportedly a collaboration between BitTorrent and blockchain.
In less than two weeks, Flixxo will appear on the market, with a very revolutionary platform that will reward users for creating, producing and distributing content using BitTorrent….
Without a doubt, YouTube is one of the most important video services available on the internet today.
The huge video data archive provides pleasure to millions of users every day. Of course, behind the platform is Google.
Over the years, many have tried to copy the YouTube idea without being able to shake the Google behemoth. The latest project that aspires to stir up the stagnant waters a bit has a very interesting player.
Until 2015, few knew that Argentine developer Federico Abad was actually “Sebastian,” of the infamous content-sharing platform Popcorn Time.
Today he is part of the team behind Flixxo, a BitTorrent and blockchain platform launched in the hope of claiming a share of the video market from YouTube.
The Flixxo network will not have the traditional centralized data storage, eliminating the need for expensive server hosting and associated costs. Instead, transfers will be made peer-to-peer using the BitTorrent protocol, meaning that video content will be stored on Flixxo users’ computers.
In practice, content will be uploaded and downloaded in the same way that users do on The Pirate Bay or Abad's app, Popcorn Time.
However, there is a change to this system that will allow content creators and network participants (seeders) to earn revenue from their involvement in the system.
At the heart of the Flixxo system will be digital tokens (think of it as a virtual currency), called Flixx. These Flixx coins, can be used to gain users access to content. Content creators will also be able to choose to pay consumers when those individuals help distribute content to others.
“With no structural costs, producers can share the profits from their content with the network that supports them,” explains the team behind Flixxo according to Torrentfreak.
In addition to earning from helping distribute content, those involved in the Flixxo system will also be able to earn by watching sponsored content, i.e. Ads. While in a traditional system, ads are often considered annoying, Flixx coins will likely make them especially popular since the audience will be paid to watch them!!!!
The Flixxo team has big plans. After being founded in early 2016, it completed a working Alpha release in the second quarter of 2017. In just under two weeks, the project will hold a launch event, while also preparing offices in Los Angeles that are expected to be completed in the first half of 2018.
“A total of 1,000,000,000 (one billion) Flixx tokens will be issued, and 300,000,000 (three hundred million) tokens will be sold. Some of these tokens (not exceeding 33% or 100,000,000 Flixx) may be sold with a view to being made available to strategic investors,” Flixxo states.
“Flixxo will educate its community, and teach its users that in this new era of online value, a disintermediated internet can become a reality, a value that can be earned through participation, rewarding every social interaction,” the team explains.
