Twitter disables account responsible for DDoS attack

Twitter has shut down the account of someone who claims to have "broke" World of Warcraft (WoW) servers this weekend. Players were unable to connect to WoW and WoW Classic yesterday (Saturday, September 7) after a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

In addition to WoW, it appears that Overwatch was also affected by the attack, with some users being disconnected from games and unable to log back in. It appears that both the EU and the US were affected.

Yesterday afternoon, Blizzard Entertainment reported that the attack had ended, although some users have reported downtime after that.

Blizzard added: “Today, Saturday, September 7th, the World of Warcraft service has been negatively impacted by an ongoing DDoS attack. For several hours today, we have repeatedly seen accounts being targeted and disconnected by the attackers.

"It is our first priority to resolve any issues that prevent players from being able to play World of Warcraft smoothly. However, it is the nature of DDoS attacks that players may experience the game being unavailable. If you are disconnected or have connection, please be patient and wait a few minutes before trying again."

“We will continue to work to address the situation. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

A Twitter user or group named @UKDrillas claimed responsibility for the attack. That account has since been suspended by Twitter.

UKDrillas also attacked Wikipedia before turning its attention to Blizzard and World of Warcraft, as reported by Haaretz.com.

A DDoS attack is an attempt to flood a network with a series of requests in a short period of time, in an attempt to overload systems and take down a website or online service.
