In a recent statement, Mark Suttleworth said that more and more companies (including Dell) are turning to Linux desktop support in order to have the Ubuntu desktop on the artificial intelligence devices they are developing.
This statement did not go unnoticed by Dell, with Senior Architect Barton George saying: “If mobile power is what you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place. And if AI is what you need, the Precision 7540 and 7740 might be what you’re looking for.”
It's true that Linux computers are far behind Windowswhen it comes to consumer computing. However, they're starting to make their presence felt on developers' computers. That's because today's developers are working on projects like Kubernetes, AI, cloud-native computing, and machine learning, which are all done in Linux environments. Even Microsoft is building the Windows Subsystem for Linux.
To accomplish these projects, a great Linux PC is essential. That's why Dell has been releasing its top-of-the-line XPS 13 laptops and Precision Mobile Workstations for developers for years. This latest generation of hardware in the Project Sputnik line continues to meet the needs of top Linux developers.
The entire line of devices comes with Ubuntu 18.04, the latest LTS Ubuntu release. They also support Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Workstation 8.
The Dell Precision 3540is Dell's most affordable workstation. It features the latest 8th generation Intel Core 4-core processors. The default CPU is an Intel Core i5-8365U with 4 cores. It comes with 4GBs of DDR4 RAM, which can be expanded up to 32GB. It also has a 15.6-inch display and its price starts at just over $700.
The lightest workstation in the series is the Precision 5540.It comes with a choice of Intel Xeon E or 9th Gen Intel Core 8-core processors, along with 4TBs of storage and up to 64GB of memory. If you want high-end graphics, it can support NVIDIA Quadro T2000 (4GB) on its 15.6-inch OLED InfinityEdge display. Its pricing starts at $1,100.
Next up is the Precision 7540.Larger in size than the 5540, it features either an Intel Core Xeon E or 9th Gen Intel Core 8-core processor inside. It can accommodate up to 128GB of 2666MHz ECC memory. With a 15.6-inch display, which is maximized with a UHD HDR 400 display, users who develop or analyze detailed content will love the up to 8K resolution it offers, as well as HDR content playback via a DisplayPort 1.4. Its starting price is $1,300.
The best of the series, however, is the Precision 7740, which also features the latest Intel Core Xeon E or 9th Gen Intel Core 8-core processors. The 7740 comes with up to 128GB of ECC memory and large PCIe SSD storage capacity (up to 8TB). It also features the latest NVIDIA Quadro RTX graphics, up to the RTX5000, providing real-time ray tracing and graphics-based AI acceleration for its UltraSharp UHD IGZO 17.3-inch display.
