I was bored, so I hacked NASA, says 'Plane Hacker' Chris Roberts

The well-known hacker Chris Roberts revealed that he hacked the American space agency NASA simply because he was bored.

Speaking to the Anadolu (AA) agency during the summit conference on the digital age in Istanbul, Roberts said he enjoyed hacking and exposing security vulnerabilities on the internet in giant structures such as NASA.

“We have found that the security of communication between satellite and ground systems is not well encrypted. We accessed the system by bypassing the access control measures of NASA's International Space Station”, he said.

Emphasizing that there was no impenetrable system, Roberts noted that global transport networks must seriously address the issue of cyber security and fill the gaps exposed by the «good hackers».

In 2015, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigated Roberts on suspicion of hacking the plane's computer system via wireless internet (WiFi) during the flight.

A report filed by the FBI in federal court in New York alleges that Roberts told agents that he had successfully hacked “in-flight entertainment systems” about 15 to 20 times from 2011 to 2014.

The sworn statement asserted that Roberts claimed he was still able to bypass flight controls and force the aircraft to be diverted to the sides.

Roberts, who later became known as “Plane Hacker”, insisted that he hacked only to demonstrate significant vulnerabilities in the IT systems used in commercial aircraft.
