A future update to Google Maps will include new features to automatically remove location history, if you wish.
At this point, Google Maps tracks your location for increased convenience, as you can simply view your history to easily navigate to a specific destination.

As a heavy Google Maps user, I can attest that this feature comes in extremely handy, especially when using the app behind the wheel because you can easily set the GPS to a previous location much faster.
However, there are users who consider this a privacy issue and want their location history removed from the app. Google Maps already allows them to do this manually, but in a future update, the app will be able to do everything on its own.
At this point, there are no details on how this feature might be further configured, such as when the data will be removed, but 9to5google has spotted an early implementation in the 10.10 beta. Of course, it's also worth noting that the feature is still in development, so just don't hold your breath for an official launch.
Additionally, Google Maps will be able to provide recommendations based on your personal events. Of course, this means the app will have to look at your calendar and Gmail reservations, but if a specific location is mentioned in your entries in those apps, Google Maps can automatically give you navigation directions to your destination.
Apparently, you'll have the option to turn off your personal events on Google Maps, but it remains to be seen how this feature will work and how many people will simply keep it enabled.
