The growing popularity of video streaminghas given scammers a new way to make easy money. Along with the associated risks that have emerged, the Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning.
The warning asks users to read emails claiming to be from Netflix with extreme caution. It appears that scammers are sending fake emails to steal login information and spread malware.
The FTC specifically states that clicking on a link could end up installing ransomware, which could lock you out of your computer. Along similar lines, Ohio State Police released a screenshot stating that Netflix “has an issue with your current billing information” and needs users to click on a specific link to update their payment method.
The warning advises users to contact the company directly if they are suspicious of an email that appears to come from them. They should also take a closer look at grammar, spelling, email addresses, phone numbers, etc.
The FTC also asked users to forward any suspicious email to them, as well as to the corresponding company.
Finally, users can test their knowledge of phishing and see if they are properly equipped to protect their digital lives by playing this game.
