Apple: Security updates protect you from IDN homograph attacks

Apple

How often do you update your Apple devices ? If you neglect updates, look at your mobile phone now and immediately update the software and applications for a very important reason that we will explain below.

Most Apple device users install new software and update their apps on time, but there is also a small category of people who, for their own reasons, neglect to update on time .If you belong to the second category, then you should be especially careful with the letter “d”, which does not always represent the same letter of the Latin alphabet as we know it. In fact, the risk is detected every time you see this letter in the URL address bar in Safari. At first glance, it seems like there is no risk, but in fact it is a significant problem, especially for Apple users who do not have the latest OS software. According to security researchers, there is a high probability of finding many victims of attacks. In fact, they gave the following name to these attacks: “IDN homograph attacks”.

How and when do IDN homograph attacks?

These attacks occur whenever a user types the domain into a browser and uses Unicode characters, which look like Latin characters. For example, coinḃase.com is an IDN homograph attack for the official coinbase.com (note the dot above the letter b). Although these domains look similar, they are used to trick users into thinking they are navigating to a legitimate site.

Such attacks have been reported from time to time, but according to researchers, Apple protects your mobile from Unicode characters, with the exception of characters that look like the letter d. Specifically, Safari converts any character that looks like “d” to the regular form of the letter, removing any symbol, so it is very easy for the user not to realize that this is an attack.

Researchers claim that the problem is worrying, as the letter d corresponds to 25% of all domains. The problem of course concerns everyone who has not upgraded their mobile phone and it is advisable to proceed with the updates immediately to avoid problems regarding the security of their Apple devices.
