AMD Zen 2: Processors with 8 cores at 4.5 GHz are coming

We hope that AMD's new processor line, Zen 2 (7nm-based), will be released soon, and now new data confirm rumors that have been circulating. The information comes from a member of the HardOCP forum, and confirms that Zen 2 (also known as the third generation Ryzen) have 8 cores with 16 threads and a base clock at 4 GHz that boosts up to 4.5 GHz.

The benchmarks that were completed were done using a Radeon RX Vega 64, in combination with an AMD motherboard. The bad news is that during the tests there were many crashes according to the source, who pointed out that some benchmarks had to be run multiple times from the beginning, as they failed to complete repeatedly. However, this is not enough to draw conclusions, as such behavior from "sample" hardware is expected.

The HardOCP said that the new chip was expected to compete with the Intel Core i7-8700K in terms of performance. The Epyc series (processors for server systems) based on Zen 2 has already been presented at Computex. We expect the specific series intended for servers to be released early next year.

Finally, we can expect a performance increase of about 10% to 15% compared to per-clock performance with Zen 2. There are rumors about the flagship processor of the series with 32 cores, but it may also be released with an even more powerful model with 64 cores, specially designed for servers.

Earlier in 2018, AMD reported that it has already started and is working on the chipset that will be used in the Zen 5 processors.
