DDNS, dynamic DNS, or more specifically dynamic domain name system, is a service that maintains and "translates" domain names into dynamic IP addresses. Through such a service, you can access your computer or files located at your home, from anywhere in the world.
DDNS serves a similar purpose to DNS. DDNS allows those who own ftp servers, or other types of services, to access these services by "calling" a specific name (domain name) instead of an IP address, which changes periodically.
However, unlike DNS, which only works with static IPs, DDNS is designed to work with dynamic IPs, which are used in most home internet connections. So a DDNS service is ideal if you want to access the inside of your home network from another network.
But how do these services work?
To use such a service, you first need to choose one, such as NO-IP, and then you need to create an account. Depending on the service you choose, there will be detailed instructions on how to configure the service. Usually there are software programs that the user must download and install on their server. Also, in some of these services, it is possible to configure directly on the router, so that the software.
The way the software works is simple. Once it starts running, it constantly checks to see if the public IP of the connection has changed, and when it detects that it has changed, it contacts the DDNS service, informing it and updating its records.
This way, as long as there is an active connection, and as long as the program is running, it is guaranteed that anyone who "calls" the domain you have created will be routed to the correct place.
DNS VS DDNS
The reason why static addresses use DNS and not DDNS is because their domain name does not need to be updated. Static IPs, unlike dynamic IPs, do not change.
