Firefox Monitor Tool lets you know if your data has been leaked

Last year, Mozilla announced that it would be making an effort to partner with haveibeenpwned.com (HIBP), a popular website that allows anyone to check if their information has been leaked. Now, it will be possible, in another, slightly different way. Mozilla announced the Firefox Monitor Tool, which will notify users if their email has been leaked, or if someone is part of a mass breach. The service will be available in partnership with haveibeenpwned.com (HIBP) and the protection service, Cloudflare.

“In collaboration with HIBP, we created an anonymous data sharing method for the Firefox Monitor Tool that never sends your entire email address to a third-party service,” the company said in a blog post.

The service will allow users to enter their email address into the search bar to see if it is in databases that have been compromised by hackers. The news was published on June 25, 2018, but the site is still under construction.

Mozilla plans to invite at least 250,000 users to try the service over the next week. If you use the Firefox browser, we recommend you visit the page when it becomes available.

Mozilla's move is undoubtedly great news for users who have been victims of breaches, usually by third-party companies, and didn't know it until their data was used for malicious purposes. As for websites, it's bad news that could force them to spend more money and resources implementing the right security measures to prevent future breaches.
